A simple lesson structure
- Goal: What should the child know or be able to do?
- Connect: Briefly link the new idea to something already known.
- Teach: Explain, model, read, demonstrate or investigate.
- Practise: Let the child apply the skill with support.
- Check: Ask for a short explanation, demonstration or piece of work.
- Record: Note what was completed and what needs revisiting.
Keep lessons age appropriate
Young children usually benefit from shorter focused periods, movement and hands-on learning. Older children can gradually take more responsibility for reading, research, planning and independent work.
Use everyday life
Cooking can involve measurement, ratios, reading and science. Shopping can involve budgeting and percentages. Gardening can involve biology, seasons and data. Travel and community visits can become geography, history and writing opportunities.
